Let’s talk briefly about the Gospel.
Before then, have you read the first part? Please do so here
If you’ve heard the Gospel truth(there’d be another series on this), it’s enough motivation for you when you pray!
Here, I’d be sharing truths you might have heard before but never paid attention to highlighting the main points and picking them one after the other:
- Christ died, was buried and rose again so that I’d never die again(what John 3:16 emphasizes, tho we miss it many times). Eternal life shouldn’t be a prayer point but an acknowledgement. A thing of rejoicing and Thanksgiving!
- I have a new nature! The Old man has been cruficied(a one time thing not a continuous thing). I now have the Holy Spirit on my inside working in and through me. He’s my seal! The fulfilment of Christ’s promise. I pray accordingly knowing that I’d be raised up on the last day as a result.
- I was purposefully predestined and chosen because I believed in what Jesus did. I should no longer pray like I have no one! Or live without purpose. This is it! The Father chose me before I knew I needed to be chosen.
- Salvation wasn’t based on my works and I should no longer pray to be saved or counted worthy but depend on the Holy Spirit to keep me. He does a better job! 1 Peter 1:4,5
- I should stop trusting in physical things(e.g what I wear to define me), Christ defines me!
- I was chosen before time to be blameless and holy not because of what I have done but what Jesus did. So I should no longer pray like I’m a sinner or pray to be sanctified. Holiness is not a prayer point either. You must know what the word says about you and then pray according.
- Your Spirit is the real you and that’s what got changed when you believed. In your Spirit, you’re as holy as God is. It’s a thing of nature not behaviour! Learn to pray as a holy person, that’s how the Father sees you in Christ!
- To be God’s delight, blameless and holy before Him in love.
- Christ took away the sin problem and so confession of sins isn’t Biblical(a whole lot to explain here)!!
- God has done all there is to be done in Christ! He gave you His best gift for free, what will He not give you? He’s given! The question or prayer should be knowing how to receive.
I don’t know about you but these are motivating enough. Those are powerful truths!! Maybe your prayer has been just about asking God for things and you’ve not seen how you fit into the picture as a believer. You’ve been limiting yourself. That’s not the major reason for prayers!!
A lot of us have been taught that we’re to pray to God for more power or for holiness but it’s completely contrary to what’s in scriptures.
See Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians:
[I always pray] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son].
And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God’s people),
and [so that you will begin to know] what the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe.
Ephesians 1:16-18
These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength which He produced in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the heavenly place.
There’s never a charge to pray for power, we already got power(because of the Spirit in us) even in Elijah’s time. He understood that prayer changes situations and can be used in different ways even if they only had the Spirit rest on them and not within.
James 5:16
The more conscious you are of the Spirit dwelling in you, the more effective you are in ministry as a believer. See Paul’s charge to Timothy! He always let’s lets him know he’s already got it. The Holy Spirit doesn’t come and go, He’d never leave you nor forsake you!
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
2 Timothy 1:6 KJV
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
2 Timothy 1:13-14 KJV
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
2 Timothy 3:14 KJV
You got it! So walk in it! He tells them who they were:
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:17 KJV
He also lets them know what’s attainable. The reason you won’t live in sin is because you’re dead to sin. Your nature has been changed so your conduct must align as you’re taught the right knowledge about who you are.
It’s a thing of nature first! He says, your nature has been changed, you were once this now you are this! Pray accordingly! God has called you holy, stop praying to be holy! Stop praying to be like Jesus, it’s not a prayer point!
If you knew me some years back, I loved this song so much, “O to be like thee, blessed Redeemer”. It’s one hymn I always looked forward to singing in church or at home. I would sing and record while I’m worshipping. When I learnt who I am in Christ, it now seemed like a contradiction. It was tough for me initially but I learnt to see myself the way God sees me! Pray like He’d have me do because it needed to be the only truth for me to stand perfect in His will for me.
Dear believer, learn to look to the Word and pray the Word. Stop doubting! It’s not about how you feel but what Christ did for you! You’re not unworthy. Christ has made you worthy before the Father! He now sees you as a holy man! Live like you are! Conduct yourself as such! Always remember! Pray as such!
You’re not a sinner saved by Grace. You were a sinner who’s now born again. You’re now a holy man/woman. Your nature has been changed! You have God’s Spirit on your inside! Stop doubting! Start believing these truths. Stop coming to God in prayers like a sinner. Come boldly before the throne of Grace and assure your heart! You alone can do this!
